Description:: Volume 1 of 'Album of pictures by Kōrin' (Kōrin gafu) featuring pictures designed by Nakamura Hōchū in the style of Ogata Kōrin, block-printed and hand-applied colour on paper, published in Japan in 1802. The illustrations in these two albums were designed by Nakamura Hōchū (died 1819), an artist credited with playing an important role in the revival of Rinpa painting and decorative arts in the early nineteenth century. This bold and decorative aesthetic style is named for the celebrated Kyoto painter Ogata Kōrin (1658-1716), emulated here. Although the Chester Beatty albums lack the printed preface, postscript and colophon, they share many features in common with works belonging to the original 1802 edition. The use of hand-applied colour is is particularly interesting in this regard.
