Two folios from the Blue Qur'an.
Highly distinctive, the Blue Qur'an was produced on dark blue indigo-coloured parchment, and written out in gold Arabic script, with silver markers placed between the verses. This rich (and costly) palette indicates a high status manuscript, as does the unusually large scale. Originally the Blue Qur'an was a seven-volume set, one of which is (intact) in the national library of Tunisia. Over fifty folios of this Qur'an are now dispersed, in public and private museums worldwide: they all belong to the first seventh of the Qur'an. Three are in the Chester Beatty (Is 1405A and Is 1405B).
Codex, gold, silver and ink on indigo-coloured parchment, 2 folios in modern binding, Arabic text in black-outlined gold kufic script, silver verse-markers within text and margin (fol. 1v), non-sequential folios from the Blue Qur'an, S2:60-65 (fol. 1) and S2:93-101 (fol. 2), possibly Baghdad, Iraq, c. 800-900
