Two hand-coloured etchings printed on a single sheet from a composite album of 97 folios (147 prints) of comic illustrations under the title Darly's Comic Prints of Characters, Caricatures, Macaronies &c., published by Mary and Matthew Darly in London in 1770 and 1774.
A knight of the spit is said to be a caricature of Admiral Thomas Pye (1708/9-1785) who was knighted 24 June 1773 at Spithead. In 'The last drop', a stout man stands on tiptoes to guzzle the last drops from a large punch bowl as death stands over him. 'Memento mori' (‘remember to die’) images were popular throughout the medieval and early modern periods and death appears in a number of Darly’s comic prints as a comment on excess.
